American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting

March 1-5, Orlando, Florida, USA

We presented several interesting papers related to adverse local tissue reactions in patients with metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. The meeting was an excellent opportunity to catch up with collaborators from all over the world.

 

2015

70th Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) Meeting

June 17-20, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

The coastal seaport city of Vancouver was the venue for this year COA meeting. We presented the results of a biomechanical study on periprosthetic distal femoral fracture fixation. 

 

Biennial Allan Gross Fellowship Society Symposium

June 12-13, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Mount Sinai Hospital and University of Toronto organized the first Biennial Allan Gross Fellowship Society Symposium. The program consisted of scientific presentations given by Dr. Gross’s previous fellows as well as Keynote address and live surgery. We presented a paper on the combined used of acetabular cages and Trabecular metal augments in revision total hip arthroplasty. In the Symposium, Dr. Tatu Mäkinen was awarded with 2014/2015 Allan Gross Fellowship Award for outstanding achievements during his Adult Lower Extremity Reconstruction Fellowship.

 

16th EFORT Congress

May 27-29, Prague, Czech Republic

As part of our collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School we presented three interesting studies related to the follow-up of patients with metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. We also presented a new study related to the demographics and treatment of open ankle fractures. We would like to thank EFORT and the local organizing committee for a great meeting.

 

University of Toronto, Division of Orthopaedics, 2015 City-Wide Fellowship Research Day

May 12, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

This year the City-Wide Fellowship Research Day was held at Salter Auditorium at Sick Kids Hospital. We presented the results on focally constrained liners in revision total hip arthroplasty. The Keynote speaker was Dr. John Wedge and Dr. Michael McKee also gave an excellent presentation on medical – legal issues in orthopaedics.

 

Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Meeting

March 28-31, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

We presented two posters at the ORS annual meeting this year. The first was an MRI study related to adverse local tissue reactions in patients with metal-on-metal hip replacement and the second was a biomechanical study related to periprosthetic distal femoral fracture fixation. 

 

Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe (FORTE) Summit

February 19-20, Rolle, Switzerland

We presented a paper on orthopaedic education in Finland at the first FORTE summit. This was an excellent opportunity to learn from our colleagues in other European countries and compare notes on education. 

 

XVIII Finnish-Austrian Trauma Course

January 24-30, Oberlech, Austria

We had two great presentations at the Finnish-Austrian trauma course. These were entitled “Wound complications after plate fixation of proximal tibia fractures” and “Open ankle fractures - current treatment”.

Finnish Orthopaedic Association Annual Symposium

November 26-28, Helsinki, Finland

We presented an interesting paper on the contemporary treatment and outcomes of open ankle fractures. 

 

Harvard Medical School 44th Annual Advances in Arthroplasty Course

October 7-10, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

We presented the results of a study examining the location of adverse local tissue reactions following metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty. The study also examined the relationship between the severity of these reactions and patient reported outcomes.

 

Mikko Ovaska’s Doctoral Defense

October 3, Helsinki, Finland

Mikko Ovaska defended his doctoral thesis entitled “Complications in Ankle Fracture Surgery”. His opponent was Professor Heikki Kröger from Kuopio University Hospital. The disputation was truly a pleasure to follow and Dr. Ovaska's thesis received substantial attention in both national and international media.

 

Nordic Orthopaedic Federation (NOF) Congress

May 7-9, Helsinki, Finland

We organized the FORTE session for orthopaedic trainees, which was a great success. In this session we focused on tips and tricks to improve the reduction of complex fractures.

We also presented several papers including one that assessed the adherence of hip and knee arthroplasty studies to the guidelines for standardization of radiostereometry (RSA) of implants. Another paper examined the outcomes of flap reconstruction for soft-tissue defects with exposed hardware following ankle fracture infections.
